Kamigamo Shrine

上賀茂神社

Kyoto · Kansai

Kyoto's oldest Shinto shrine (founded 678 AD), on the Kamo River in the north of the city, famous for its twin conical sand mounds (tatezuna).

Why we picked it

The older of Kyoto's two Kamo shrines and the same UNESCO listing as Shimogamo, but far enough north of the sightseeing belt that it stays quiet even in autumn.
