Kurama Onsen

鞍馬温泉

Kyoto · Kansai

Kurama Onsen is a mountain hot spring at the end of the Eizan line north of Kyoto, reached through cedar forest and best known for its open-air bath looking out over the valley. The surrounding slopes turn deep red with maples in autumn, which is the busiest time to visit. The village below also holds the Kurama Fire Festival each October. Bathers with tattoos are admitted: the onsen answers the question directly on its own site, with the usual exclusion of organised-crime members rather than any condition about the tattoo itself.

Why we picked it

Mainstream travelers often overlook Kurama Onsen due to its remote location and the popularity of more accessible hot springs.
