Koyasan Reihokan Museum

高野山霊宝館

Wakayama · Kansai

The treasure house of Mount Koya, holding the Buddhist sculpture, painting and manuscripts gathered from Kongobu-ji and the mountain's sub-temples, including a large number of National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties. It opened in 1921 and is run by the Koyasan Shingon school itself, with exhibitions rotating through the year.

Why we picked it

Visitors walk between Okunoin and the Garan and rarely go in, so the mountain's best objects sit in a quiet building most of the day.
