A living farming hamlet in the mountains of Nantan, far northern Kyoto Prefecture, where around 40 thatched-roof (kayabuki) farmhouses, many 150-220 years old, cluster on a green hillside, protected as a National Important Preservation District since 1993. In late January/early February the 'Yukitoro' snow-lantern illumination lights the snow-blanketed village.
