Nara · Kansai
Mount Wakakusa is a grassy hill rising directly behind Nara Park, its three tiers climbing to a summit with an open view over the city, the Todai-ji roofline and the Nara basin. Deer graze the slopes, and the turf is kept short and treeless by the annual burning. It is gated and ticketed, and closed through the winter; the Yamayaki grass-burning festival sets the whole hillside alight one night each January.
