Karukayado Hall

苅萱堂

Wakayama · Kansai

A small roadside hall on the approach to Okunoin, preserved as the hermitage where the monk Karukayado Doshin and his son Ishidomaru practiced ascetic devotion, a tale famous in joruri puppet theatre. Painted panels inside narrate their whole life story.

Why it's hidden

This modest hall sits on the walking route to Okunoin yet is passed by almost everyone rushing toward the cemetery gates.
