Mount Yotei

羊蹄山

Hokkaido

Mount Yotei, often called 'Ezo Fuji' for its near-symmetrical cone, is a 1,898m stratovolcano rising alone above the Niseko basin and visible from most of the surrounding valley — it is the backdrop to the region's ski fields in winter and to its farmland in summer. Four trails climb it from Makkari, Kutchan, Kyogoku and Kimobetsu, each taking most of a day. The official climbing season opens with the Makkari route's 山開き on the third Sunday of June and runs until snow returns in October; outside that the trails are a serious winter mountaineering proposition, though the peak itself is in view year-round.
