Itsukushima Shrine

厳島神社

Hiroshima · Chugoku

Itsukushima Shrine stands on stilts over a tidal inlet on Miyajima, its halls and the vermilion torii offshore appearing to float only at high tide — at low tide visitors walk out across the mudflat instead, so it is worth checking a tide table before going. Admission is ¥300 for adults, or ¥500 combined with the Treasure Hall, and the shrine opens at 6:30 AM every day of the year. The five-storied pagoda beside it is under wraps for renovation, with work scheduled to finish in December 2026.

Why we picked it

Many mainstream travelers focus on Hiroshima city and miss the serene beauty of Miyajima Island where the shrine is located.
