Yuasa Old Town (Soy Sauce Birthplace)

湯浅 伝統的建造物群保存地区

Wakayama · Kansai

Yuasa is the birthplace of Japanese soy sauce, and its preserved old town of latticed merchant houses, historic breweries and the Edo-era Jinburo bathhouse forms one of Kansai’s Important Preservation Districts. Traditional brewers such as Kadocho still make soy sauce by hand along the narrow lanes.

Why we picked it

The literal cradle of soy sauce — a walkable Edo townscape most travellers pass on the way to Kumano.
