Tsugizakura-oji

Tsugizakura-oji is one of the ninety-nine subsidiary shrines that mark the Kumano Kodo, standing on the Nakahechi route above Nonaka with a rank of enormous cedars behind it — the Ippo-sugi, so called because every one of them leans its branches south toward Kumano. A stone stairway climbs to the small hall from the road, and the Tonoki-jaya teahouse and the Nonaka spring sit a few minutes' walk along the path. It is one of the few oji on the route whose original grove survived the Meiji shrine mergers.
