Kibitsu Shrine

吉備津神社

Okayama · Chugoku

Ancient Shinto shrine traditionally cited as the inspiration for the Momotarō legend; its unique double-gabled honden/haiden (Kibitsu-zukuri style, National Treasure, rebuilt 1425) connects to a 398m covered wooden corridor, and the shrine hosts the Narukama cauldron fortune-telling ritual.

Why we picked it

Japan Heritage site with National Treasure architecture that's almost unknown to foreign visitors outside Momotarō enthusiasts — quiet, atmospheric, and an easy rail hop on the aptly-named Kibi (Momotarō) Line.
