Nishinomiya Shrine

西宮神社

Hyogo · Kansai

Nishinomiya Shrine is the head shrine of the Ebisu shrine network, standing in the city of Nishinomiya on the coastal strip between Osaka and Kobe. Ebisu, enshrined here, is the deity of good fortune and commerce, and the grounds hold a long earthen outer wall, a red main gate and a small display room on Ebisu belief. It is best known for the Toka Ebisu rites in January, when a footrace to the main hall picks the year's fuku-otoko.

Why we picked it

Travellers pass through Nishinomiya between Osaka and Kobe without stopping, and the head shrine of a nationwide network sits five minutes from the station almost unvisited outside January.
