Sakitsu Church
﨑津教会（崎津天主堂）Kumamoto · Kyushu
A Gothic Catholic church built in 1934, funded by French missionary Father Augustin Halbout, directly on the harbor of Sakitsu, a small fishing village on Amakusa's west coast; its interior has rare tatami-mat flooring and the altar sits atop the site of a former fumi-e (Christian-trampling) stone from the persecution era. Part of the UNESCO World Heritage inscription "Hidden Christian Sites in the Nagasaki Region" (2018) — the only component site located outside Nagasaki Prefecture. Typhoon season runs roughly June to October, and a passing storm can cancel ferries, flights and all marine activity across the islands at a day's notice — check the forecast before you rely on this stop.
