Shirakawa Suigen

白川水源

Kumamoto · Kyushu

A spring on the grounds of Shirakawa Yoshimi Shrine in Minamiaso village, discharging ~60 tons of crystal-clear water per minute year-round at a constant 14°C, forming the headwaters of the Shirakawa River. Designated one of Japan's '100 Best Waters' (Ministry of the Environment, 1985).

Why we picked it

A clear spring pool a short walk from the train station named after it, yet almost entirely absent from English-language 'Aso must-see' lists dominated by the crater and Kusasenri — a quiet, contemplative counterpoint to the volcanic sights.
