米塚

Kumamoto · Kyushu

An almost perfectly symmetrical, grass-covered scoria cone about 80m tall, formed by a strombolian eruption roughly 3,300 years ago. Its name ('rice mound') comes from a legend the Aso Shrine deity once scooped rice from its indented crater to feed the poor.

Why it's hidden

A textbook grassy volcanic cone that appears on nearly every Aso postcard. Climbing it is not permitted, so it is admired from the roadside as you pass — which is why plenty of people photograph it without ever learning its name.

Best season
Spring · Summer · Autumn
Spring–autumn for green grass cover; access to the cone itself is restricted for conservation
