Sakurai Futamigaura (Itoshima)

桜井二見ヶ浦

Fukuoka · Kyushu

A pair of sacred 'married rocks' (meoto-iwa) standing about 150m offshore on the Itoshima coast, joined by a giant shimenawa rope and fronted by a snow-white torii gate built in 1968. Recognised among Japan's Top 100 Beaches and Top 100 Sunset Views, it is Itoshima's signature seascape — and around the spring and autumn equinoxes the setting sun drops precisely between the two rocks, framed by the torii.

Why we picked it

Despite being an icon of the Genkai coast, it sits on the quiet Itoshima peninsula rather than a major tourist trail, so most foreign visitors never reach it.
