Hirado Castle

平戸城

Nagasaki · Kyushu

A hilltop castle that was the seat of the Matsura clan, daimyo of the Hirado Domain, overlooking the Hirado Strait. The current keep is a 1960s reconstruction housing clan artifacts, but the site retains original stone walls and a few surviving structures such as the Kaijo-yagura turret. Its ramparts give sweeping views over the harbour, the town and the Hirado Ohashi bridge.

Why it's hidden

Far off the main Kyushu tourist circuit in remote northwest Nagasaki, this castle sees a fraction of the visitors of mainland keeps.
