Yahiko Shrine

彌彦神社(弥彦神社)

Niigata · Chubu

Yahiko Shrine is an ancient Shinto shrine at the foot of sacred Mount Yahiko, the ichinomiya (premier shrine) of the former Echigo Province, founded in antiquity and rebuilt in 1916 after a fire. It sits within the Sado-Yahiko-Yoneyama Quasi-National Park, with a ropeway from behind the shrine to the summit. The adjoining park is known for its cherry blossoms and for its autumn foliage and chrysanthemum show.

Why we picked it

A major pilgrimage site with a working ropeway up Mt.; Yahiko that gets minimal international attention.
