UNESCO World Heritage Tendai Buddhist temple founded in 1105 by Fujiwara no Kiyohira, head temple of the Tendai sect in the Tohoku region; home to the Konjikido (Golden Hall), a National Treasure completed in 1124 and covered entirely in gold leaf, mother-of-pearl inlay, lacquerwork and metalwork.
