Showa Daibutsu (Seiryu-ji)

The Showa Daibutsu is a 21.35-metre seated bronze Buddha at Seiryu-ji, a Koyasan Shingon temple in the hills southeast of Aomori city. At about 220 tonnes it is the largest seated bronze Buddha in Japan — taller in the seated form than either the Nara or the Kamakura Daibutsu — and it is also one of the newest, unveiled on 30 September 1984, which is what the name records: a Daibutsu of the Showa era. The temple around it was built to match, with a five-storey pagoda and a large hall in traditional timber, so the site reads as an old temple complex that happens to be forty years old. It is a working temple of the Koyasan school and doubles as the Aomori branch of Koyasan.
