Daikozen-ji Temple
大興善寺Saga · Kyushu
Daikozen-ji is a hillside temple in Kiyama founded in the eighth century, reached by a long stone stair from the car park below. Its terraced garden, the Keien, is planted with some 50,000 azalea bushes and a stand of maples above them, which is why locals call it the azalea temple. The garden is ticketed only in its two display seasons; the temple itself is open the rest of the year.
