Miyagi · Tohoku
A small Rinzai temple in Matsushima founded in 1647 as the mausoleum of Date Mitsumune, a grandson of Masamune who died at nineteen. Its Sankeiden hall carries carvings of roses and western playing-card suits brought back by the Hasekura embassy to Europe, and four distinct gardens fill the rest of the grounds.
