Zuisenji Temple
井波別院瑞泉寺Toyama · Chubu
Zuisenji is a large Jodo Shinshu temple at the head of the old street in Inami, Nanto, and the reason the town became a woodcarving centre. Founded by the priest Shakunyo and rebuilt after repeated fires, its main hall and gate carry dense relief carving by local craftsmen, and the temple's rebuilding is what drew carvers to Inami in the first place. In 2018 the carving tradition centred on the temple was given Japan Heritage designation as the town of Inami woodcarving.
