天鏡閣

Fukushima · Tohoku

A Renaissance-style Western mansion above the north shore of Lake Inawashiro, built in 1908 as a villa for Prince Arisugawa Takehito and designated an Important Cultural Property. Rooms on the ground and upper floors are open with their original fittings, and the building is regularly used as a film and drama location. Hours are slightly longer from May to October. Heavy snow, bear sightings or the New Year period can cause temporary closures.

Why it's hidden

Foreign visitors reach the Bandai area for the lakes and volcano and rarely learn there is an intact imperial villa on the lake shore.
