Nagano · Chubu
Kumano Kotai Shrine stands at the top of the old Usui Pass, where the boundary between Nagano and Gunma runs directly through the middle of its main sanctuary. Because of that split the site is administered as two separate religious bodies, each with its own priest, office and offering box. A large shinanoki linden in the grounds is venerated as a sacred tree. The pass road serving the shrine is open from early April to late November.
