Toga Art Park
富山県利賀芸術公園Toyama · Chubu
Toga Art Park is a prefectural performing-arts complex in the mountain village of Toga, built around six theatres set in forest and terraced fields. Its centrepiece, Toga Sanbo, is a gassho-zukuri farmhouse converted into what is described as Japan's largest gassho-roofed theatre; the grounds also hold an open-air amphitheatre cut into the hillside and a studio and rehearsal buildings. The director Tadashi Suzuki moved his company here from Tokyo in 1976 and it has hosted international theatre festivals since. Entry to the grounds is free, and the park is closed from 1 December to 31 March.
