Happo-one is the largest ski area in the Hakuba Valley and the site of the 1998 Nagano Olympic downhill, a broad north-east face rising from the valley floor at about 760m to 1,831m with a vertical drop of over a kilometre and long, steep pitches off the Usagidaira and Kurobishi ridges. The Adam gondola lifts out of Happo village, which has its own hot spring and a dense strip of bars and restaurants that makes it the valley's social centre. Lifts usually run from early December to early May, with the exact opening and closing set by snowfall and announced each autumn; in the green season the same gondola carries walkers to the Happo-one ridge trail.
