熊野磨崖仏

Oita · Kyushu

The largest rock-carved Buddhist images in Japan — a Fudō Myōō and Dainichi Nyorai carved in bas-relief into a volcanic tuff cliff on the Kunisaki Peninsula, reached via a steep stone staircase through forest. National Historic Site (1955) and National Important Cultural Property (1964).

Why we picked it

The undisputed #1 single religious/art site on the Kunisaki Peninsula, yet it sits outside the existing 'Kunisaki Rock Temples' entry (which covers Futago-ji, a different temple ~19km away).
