Kitakata Kura no Sato

Kitakata Kura no Sato

喜多方蔵の里

Fukushima · Tohoku

An open-air museum in Kitakata where around a dozen storehouses and farm buildings have been relocated onto a 4,500-square-metre site to show the town’s storehouse-building tradition. The buildings include a shop storehouse, a miso storehouse and a bent-roof headman’s farmhouse, with interiors furnished as they were in use. Kitakata has some 4,000 kura standing across the town, and this site explains what the walking routes pass. It closes only over the New Year period.

Why it's hidden

Kitakata is visited for ramen and the storehouse architecture is usually overlooked, leaving this museum very quiet.
