This small man-made lake in Agano is one of Japan's most famous swan-wintering sites, where roughly 6,000 whooper swans and tundra swans (hakucho) overwinter after flying south from Siberia. They are present from around October to March -- feeding times draw hundreds of birds close to the shore -- while in the warmer months the lake is a quiet park with irises and lotus. It has been a Ramsar Convention wetland since 2008.
