Nabegataki Falls

鍋ヶ滝

Kumamoto · Kyushu

A curtain-shaped waterfall about 10m tall and 20m wide in Oguni, near the Kumamoto-Oita border, famous for the walkway that passes directly behind the falling water, letting visitors look out through the cascade toward the forest and sunlight. Gained national fame after appearing in a Nescafé Gold Blend TV commercial. Best timed for late spring to summer (fresh green, higher water flow) and autumn foliage (Nov); midday for best sunlight through the falls.

Why we picked it

The closest major natural landmark to Kurokawa Onsen, about a 20-25 minute drive, and a favourite local pairing with a soak — yet it rarely reaches first-time Kumamoto lists. Its wide curtain of water can be walked behind.
