Umi Jigoku

海地獄

Oita · Kyushu

Umi Jigoku is the cobalt-blue pool among Beppu's Hells, and it is far too hot to bathe in — this is a viewing site rather than an onsen. Admission is ¥500 for high-school age and up and it opens 8:00 AM–5:00 PM. There is a footbath and a cafe in the grounds, and it is about 15 minutes by bus from Beppu Station.

Why we picked it

Many travelers focus on more popular hot springs and overlook this beautiful site.
