To-no-Hetsuri

A line of tower-shaped rock pillars carved out of the Okawa river cliff in Shimogo, designated a National Natural Monument in 1943. A suspension bridge crosses the river to a corridor-like ledge cut into the base of the cliff, where a Kokuzo Bosatsu image is enshrined in a rock cave. The name comes from a local dialect word for a cliff or steep slope falling to a river. It is a five-minute walk from To-no-Hetsuri Station on the Aizu Railway.
