Oita · Kyushu

A folk-history and merchant-economics museum in Hita's Mameda-machi district, housed in the residence of the Hirose merchant family; adjoins the former home of Edo-period scholar Hirose Tansō.

Why it's hidden

Overshadowed by the more-photographed lantern-lined streets of Mameda-machi itself, this museum sees relatively few visitors.
