Aizu Sazaedo
会津さざえ堂Fukushima · Tohoku
A hexagonal three-storey wooden hall on the slope of Iimoriyama in Aizuwakamatsu, built in 1796 and designated an Important Cultural Property. Its interior is a double-helix ramp, so visitors walking up and those walking down never cross paths — a structure with almost no parallel in Japanese architecture. It stands a short climb above the graves of the Byakkotai, the young Aizu-domain fighters of the Boshin War. Opening hours are longer from April to November than in the December-to-March period.
