UNESCO World Heritage Tendai temple founded in 850 by Ennin; its original halls are long gone, but its Heian-period Pure Land garden survives almost intact around the Oizumi-ga-ike pond, including Japan's only surviving Heian-era yarimizu (a winding garden stream once used for courtly poetry-composing parties).
