Motsu-ji

毛越寺

Iwate · Tohoku

UNESCO World Heritage Tendai temple founded in 850 by Ennin; its original halls are long gone, but its Heian-period Pure Land garden survives almost intact around the Oizumi-ga-ike pond, including Japan's only surviving Heian-era yarimizu (a winding garden stream once used for courtly poetry-composing parties).

Why we picked it

A paired UNESCO site sitting right next to Chuson-ji but frequently skipped by day-trippers who only see the Golden Hall — one of the best-preserved Heian-era garden designs in the country, yet drawing a fraction of the crowds Kyoto gardens get.
