Kurobe Gorge

黒部峡谷

Toyama · Chubu

One of Japan's deepest ravines, cut by the Kurobe River between 2,000m peaks and reached by the open-sided Kurobe Gorge Railway (torokko), a narrow-gauge line built to service the valley's hydro dams. The railway runs from about 20 April to 30 November; there is no road. Through 30 September 2026 trains turn back at Nekomata part-way up the gorge, with full-line service to Keyakidaira and its riverside hot-spring walks resuming on 1 October 2026.

Why we picked it

Mainstream travelers often overlook Kurobe Gorge due to its remote location and the limited access provided by the railway.
