蒲生の大クス is the largest tree in Japan, and Aira City states its estimated age at about 1,500 years. It stands in the grounds of Kamo Hachiman Shrine, designated a National Special Natural Monument — the highest of the two natural-monument grades, held by only a small number of trees in the country. A low wooden boardwalk rings the base so the trunk can be walked around without anyone standing on the roots, and the scale reads properly only from there: the crown covers most of the shrine forecourt. The surrounding town of Kamo is quiet and takes only a short wander.
