Kagoshima · Kyushu
A traditional east-coast hamlet on Kikaijima where residents historically built walls from fossil-coral limestone quarried from the island's own uplifted reef rock, to block typhoon wind and salt spray. Because Kikaijima has no venomous habu snakes (unlike neighboring Amami Ōshima), these old coral walls were never removed and survive intact throughout the settlement.
Usual hours — confirm with the official site for holidays + seasonal closures.
How to get there
About 15 minutes by car from Kikai Airport; no public bus/train.
