Aden Village Coral Stone Walls

阿伝集落のサンゴの石垣

Kagoshima · Kyushu

A traditional east-coast hamlet on Kikaijima where residents historically built walls from fossil-coral limestone quarried from the island's own uplifted reef rock, to block typhoon wind and salt spray. Because Kikaijima has no venomous habu snakes (unlike neighboring Amami Ōshima), these old coral walls were never removed and survive intact throughout the settlement.

Why we picked it

A rare, living example of vernacular architecture built directly from the island's signature fossil-coral geology; designated part of Amami Gunto National Park in 2017.
