Beppu Beach Sand Bath (Shoningahama Sand SPA)

別府海浜砂湯(上人ヶ浜サンドスパ)

Oita · Kyushu

On the Shoningahama waterfront within Shonin Park, this seaside sand-bath facility lets visitors lie directly on the beach while attendants bury them in naturally geothermal-heated sand with Beppu Bay as the backdrop — the modern successor to the historic Beppu Kaihin Sunayu on the same site.

Why it's hidden

Beppu's reputation rests on its inland bathhouses and hell district, so few visitors make it down to the shore — where you are buried in naturally steam-heated black sand within earshot of the waves.
