The Amakusa Shiro Museum in Oyano tells the story of the 1637-38 Shimabara-Amakusa rebellion and of Amakusa Shiro, the teenage figurehead the rebels rallied behind. Displays cover the hidden-Christian communities of the islands, the siege at Hara Castle and the two centuries of concealment that followed. A theatre presentation sets the uprising in context before the exhibition rooms.
