Munakata Taisha Nakatsu-gu

宗像大社 中津宮

Fukuoka · Kyushu

The middle shrine of the three that make up Munakata Taisha, standing on Oshima island at the foot of Mount Mitake and enshrining the goddess Tagitsuhime. Part of the UNESCO World Heritage 'Sacred Island of Okinoshima and Associated Sites', it is also regarded as a birthplace of Japan's Tanabata star legend, with the Amanogawa stream running through its grounds.

Why we picked it

Most visitors to Munakata Taisha stop only at the mainland Hetsu-gu, so reaching Nakatsu-gu means a ferry to Oshima and finding a far quieter World Heritage shrine.
