Shomyo Falls

称名滝

Toyama · Chubu

Shomyo Falls plunges 350 m in four tiers, making it the tallest waterfall in Japan and a designated Natural Monument. In spring snowmelt a second cascade, the 500 m seasonal Hannoki Falls, appears alongside it, and the pair briefly rank among the highest in the world. A paved path leads to a viewing bridge at the base.

Why it's hidden

It lies in a side valley below the famous alpine route, so travellers racing to cross the mountains usually skip the short detour.
