Eiheiji Temple
永平寺Fukui · Chubu
One of the two head temples of Sōtō Zen Buddhism, founded in 1244 by Dōgen deep in a cedar forest east of Fukui city. Around 150 monks still train here under a strict daily schedule of meditation, chores and chanting, and visitors can walk the covered corridors linking its seven main halls.

How to get there
Keifuku Bus routes 86/88 to Eiheiji stop (~13 min, ¥430), then 5 min walk. Direct Eiheiji Liner express bus also runs from JR Fukui Station East Exit (~30 min, ¥750).
