北岳

Yamanashi · Chubu

北岳 is Japan's second-highest mountain at 3,193 m, and getting to the start of it is a scheduled operation rather than a drive: private vehicles are barred from the road up to 広河原, so walkers leave the car at Ashiyasu or Narada and continue by bus or share-taxi, and that service runs only within a window the prefecture and city announce for each season. Above 広河原 the usual ascent climbs by way of Shirane-Oike to the hut on the shoulder, and is normally done with a night up there rather than in one push. The forest road on from 広河原 to 北沢峠 has been shut to everyone, on foot included, since Typhoon Hagibis in October 2019 with no reopening in prospect, so 北沢峠 and the peaks beyond it have to be reached from the Ina side in Nagano instead.

Why we picked it

A named summit with a real trail, listed here so a walking day can be built around the climb itself rather than a viewpoint reached by road.
