Tsugaike Kogen spreads across a wide, open highland shelf at the northern end of the Hakuba Valley, and its Hakuba Norikura-facing bowl holds one of the broadest beginner slopes in Japan — a 1,200m-wide, gently pitched apron that lets first-timers ski without ever meeting a steep section. Above it a gondola and ropeway climb toward the Tsugaike Nature Park, where the terrain turns serious and the backcountry gates open onto the Norikura face. Lifts usually run from early December into early May, with dates set by snowfall each season.
