Hara Castle Ruins

原城跡

Nagasaki · Kyushu

Ruins of a Sengoku-era coastal castle on a headland overlooking the Ariake Sea in Minamishimabara, the site of the final battle of the 1637–38 Shimabara Rebellion; inscribed in 2018 as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Hidden Christian Sites in the Nagasaki Region.

Why we picked it

Despite its UNESCO status, it sits far south of Shimabara city with no train access, so it draws a fraction of the visitors of Shimabara Castle.

How to get there

No rail line reaches Minamiarima; take the Shimatetsu bus (Kazusa-Shimabara line) from Shimabara Station to the Hara-jo-mae bus stop, then walk roughly 10-15 minutes to the ruins.
