At 186 m, Kurobe Dam is the tallest dam in Japan, an arch dam holding back an emerald reservoir deep in the Northern Alps. From late June to mid-October it releases a thundering water discharge that often throws a rainbow across the gorge. A staircase of some 220 steps climbs to a panoramic observation deck above the crest.
