The active crater of Naka-dake, one of Aso's five central cones, is one of the few volcanic craters on Earth that the public can approach on foot or by shuttle bus to peer directly into an emerald, steaming acid lake. Gas levels are monitored continuously; the rim includes blast shelters, a lookout terrace, and a small shrine.
