Oe Catholic Church

大江天主堂

Kumamoto · Kyushu

A white Romanesque church on a hilltop above Oe village, built in 1933 by French missionary Father Frédéric Louis Garnier for a community of former hidden Christians. Amakusa's second major Kirishitan-heritage church, about 9km from Sakitsu.

Why it's hidden

Overshadowed by Sakitsu Church's UNESCO listing despite being an equally striking hidden-Christian church with its own century of history.
